Bens On The West Cost

The inaugural meeting of Old Benedictines domiciled in Vancouver, Canada took place on September 16,1995 and was the culmination of several weeks of prior preparatory work.

The meeting was attended by members and their spouses and the enthusiasm and camaraderie that prevailed was a harbinger of greater happenings to follow. The Bens were quickly off the mark venturing to organize a Dinner Dance in June 1996. The ‘Bens Nite’ proved a tremendous success setting standards in entertainment and organizational finesse hitherto not witnessed by the Sri Lankan diaspora in British Columbia. The funding for this inaugural event was made possible due to the generosity of a member whose loyalty to our alma mater was a shining facet.

Our OBA still maintains the record of being the only Sri Lankan educational institution with an alumni Association in Western Canada. Our membership has recorded satisfactory progress with Bens domiciled in Calgary, Oregon and California too joining our ranks and thereby remaining close to the ‘old school’ across the miles. The destinies of our Association have been ably steered by Franz Lorage, Eric Motha, Oliver Perumal, Ranjit De Vaz and Eugene Motha.

The OBA has positively responded to the clarion calls from College and the OBU in Colombo in connection with various projects that surfaced through the years. It must be recorded that the pride of our OBA was the setting up of a Fund monitored by the OBU in Colombo for the welfare of the elderly Lasallian Brothers; this is our token of appreciation and gratitude to our former mentors and was made possible due to the generosity of our members, OBA’s in Toronto, New York and Sydney and individual Benedictines outside Canada.

It is with regret that we record the demise of Messrs. Kingsley Blake and Douglas Jansen during 2006/2007; they were vintage Bens whose loyalty to Alma Mater was exemplary.

In retrospect we are pleased to report that our OBA is actively working in tandem with alumni around the world in a manifestation of Benedictine solidarity.
