St. Benedict’s carry away ‘Nestle-Milo Cup

The sheer brilliance of goal - keeper, Rumesh Shalinda and two goals in each half, saw St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena led by Asela Tharanga carry away the glittering “Nestle-Milo” Cup, dethroning the defending Champions, Zahira College, Maradana (2 –nil) in the All Island, Inter-Schools, Division One , U-19 League Soccer Championships 2009 Final at CR&FC grounds on Monday.

It was after six years that Nestle Lanka Ltd., sponsored this tournament which attracted 18 schools, along with Division II & Division III.

Bens opened scoring in the 20th minute of the first period of play through Nissankara Madushanka and sealed the issue in the 28th minute in the 2nd half via Harshana Dilshan.

But it was the Bens acrobatic custodian, Rumesh Shalinda that stole the limelight with his brilliant goal keeping.

In the semi finals St. Benedict’s College, beat St. Thomas’ College, Matara 2/1 & Zahira College beat Hameedia Al Hussaini College on penalties 5/4, as the scores were dead locked 1/1 at full time.

In the play-off for the 3rd place, played prior to the final, St. Thomas’ College, Matara beat Hameedia Al Hussaine College on penalties 4 -2, as the scores were dead-locked 1 - 1 at full time.

In the Division II tournament which attracted 58 schools, Zahira College Gampola beat Zahira College Mawanella on penalties 4 -3, as the scores were dead locked at 1 -1 at full time. Thurstan College, Colombo took the 3rd place. In the Division III tournament, which attracted 44 schools, Hindu College, Manipay beat Zahira College, Kalmunai on penalties 4 - 3, as the scores were deadlocked 1 - 1 at full time. St. Thomas’ College, Matale took the 3rd place.

The Chief Guest at the U-19 final and the post tournament awards presentation was Senior Vice President (Commercial) Nestle Lanka Ltd., Mohamed Anzar, the Guests of Honour were, External Affaires Manager Nestle Lanka Ltd., Bandula Egodage and President FFSL, Hurley Silvera.
