St. Benedict's College Prefects Investiture 2018
The Prefects' Investiture for the Year 2018 was held at St. Benedict’s College open-air stage on 18th January 2018. Loyal Old Benedictine Major General Suraj Bangsajaya (Batch of 83')along with his charming wife, graced the occassion as chief guest.

Master Shimal Benedict was appointed Head Prefect for the year 2018, whiles Master Bevan Fernando and Master Khrishnamurthi Caushideeshan as Deputy Head Prefects.

Students who obtained best results at the GCE A/Ls 2017 too were felicitated at this occassion with mementos and certificates presented and sponsored by the batch of 93'.

Special mementos were presented to Major General Suraj Bangsajaya as a token of appreciation by the College administration and staff, the Old Boys' Union and the Batch of 83', on his appointment as Major General of the Sri Lanka Army.

Obituary - Old Benedictine D. Eassuwaran (Vice Patron of St. Benedict’s College Old Boys’ Union)
ObituaryIt is with profound sadness that we inform the demise of Old Benedictine D. Eassuwaran (Vice Patron of St. Benedict’s College Old Boys’ Union)

Late D. Eassuwaran had been a regular benefactor to our Alma Mater since the mid 60’s , Co Chairman of the building committees for the Rev Bro Luke Memorial, Rev Bro Alexander and St Francis building.
At the time of his death he held the position of a Vice Patron in the OBU.

The remains lie at his residence at # 133, New Chetty Street Colombo 13.

Cremation today, Monday 8th Jan 2018 at the General Cemetery Kanatte (Hindu Section) at 5.00pm

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace,

Late Bro. Goonetilleka was the Principal at De Mazenod College (1992-1994) Kandana, St. Sebastian College (1985-1987, 2000-2003) Moratuwa and served at St. Benedict's College Kotahena (1975-1976, 1980-1985, 1987-1992,1994-1996,2003-2008)

Funeral will take place at Madampitiya cemetery on Friday 29th December 2017 after Holy Mass at 10.00 a.m at St. Joseph's Novitiate Chapel in Mutwal.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace,

Bishop Emmanuel Fernando appointed as the new Bishop of Mannar
The Holy Father, Pope Francis appointed Auxiliary Bishop Fidelis Lionel Emmanuel Fernando as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Mannar.

Bishop Fernando will transfer from the Archdiocese of Colombo to replace Retired Bishop Joseph Kingsley Swampillai who was the Administrator of the diocese from January 2016.

Bishop Fidelis Lionel Emmanuel Fernando was born on May 20, 1948 in Jaffna. His parents are of Vembar (Tuticorin diocese) origin and he hails from a big family, four of whom are religious-two priests and two nuns. Bishop Fernando is the youngest son of late V. Xavier Bastian Fernando (Civil Engineer) and late Gnanasorubi Fernando of Vembar, South India.

He was assigned the titular see of Orta. After his primary and secondary school education at St. Benedict’s College, Colombo, he entered the Minor Seminary of St. Aloysius of Columbo Archdiocese.
After completing his studies at the Minor Seminary, he was admitted to the National Seminary of Kandy for philosophical studies. He was sent to Rome, for his theological studies where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Theology and a Licentiate in Moral Theology at Urbaniana University. From 1981 to 1987, while he was teaching at the National Major Seminary of Kandy, he went to the Catholic University of Washington (U.S.A.), where he obtained his Doctorate in Theology.

On January 6, 1973 he was ordained a priest by the Holy Father Pope Paul VI in Rome along with 38 priests from 19 countries on the solemn occasion of the 350th Anniversary of the congregation for evangelization of people. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Colombo on Nov. 28, 2011. He has held the post of professor of Theology and also of rector at the national seminary, and Episcopal Vicar for the South in the Archdiocese of Colombo. At present, he is the Episcopal Vicar for the Tamil Apostolate in the archdiocese.

As a priest he has held the following Offices:
Assistant parish priest in three parishes
Professor at the National Seminary of Kandy
Vice-Rector of the National Seminary of Kandy
Rector of the National Seminary of Kandy
Pastor, Dean in the Moratuwa area.
Episcopal Vicar for Catechesis.
The Apostolate for the Family.
Episcopal Vicar for the southern area of the Archdiocese.
Member of the Priests’ Council and the Board of Consultants.
Episcopal Vicar for the faithful of Tamil origin in the Archdiocese of Colombo.

As of 2013 statistics Mannar diocese has 89 thousand catholics, 34 parishes with 87 diocesan priests, 47 religious priests and 183 women religious.

The Inter School Tennis Competition 2017
The first and second round of the under 8 Inter School Tennis Competition were held in September and October respectively at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association courts. It was after a spell of nearly 25 years that a junior team from St. Benedict’s College took part in such a competition.

Prior to the tournament, the Benedictines went through a rigorous training programme for nearly six months as part of their preparation for the competition.

Master Marron Roshan captained the team and Master Shenal Shalendra deputised.
The results were as follows.

Beat Ananda College, Maradana (3/2), Trinity College, Kandy (4/1), Zahira College, Maradana (5/0), Kalutara Vidyalaya (4/1) and lost to St. Joseph’s College, Maradana (2/3) and Maliyadewa College, Kurunegala (1/4).

With the above performance, St. Benedict’s College qualified to play in the third round of the competition.

ST. BENEDICT'S COLLEGE COLOURS NIGHT 2017
St. Benedict’s College Colours night 2017 was held on 3rd November 2017 at the Defence Services College Auditorium, Colombo 2, amidst a large gathering.

Loyal Old Benedictine and former national Basketball Captain, Mr. Cosmos Perera graced the occasion ad Chief Guest.

Annual Requiem Mass organized by the St. Benedict's College Old Boys' Union
St. Benedict's College Old Boys' Union, follows the practice of organizing the Requiem Mass each year, in memory of the Benedictines and their immediate family who have passed the mortal world to be with the Lord Almighty.

This year too, to coincide with the month of November, the Religious Sub-Committee of the St. Benedict's College Old Boys' Union is making necessary arrangements to organize its Annual Requiem Mass on Thursday, 9th November 2017 at the St. Lucia’s Cathedral Colombo 13 commencing at 6.30 PM.

All are welcome.

St. Benedict’s College Primary Choir Champions at Provincial Level
The Primary Choristers of St. Benedict’s College emerged provincial champions at the English Day Singing Competition held by the Department of Education.

Congratulations to the Choristers for their achievement, and also thank Rev. Bro. Principal – Benedict Bonaventure for his leadership, Mrs. Maryanne Victoria - Music Teacher for her untiring efforts in training the choir, ably guided by Mrs. Shirani Joseph.

Called to eternal rest - Rev. Sr. Miriam Clare, former teacher of St. Benedict’s College Primary section.

Funeral took place on 23rd October 2017.
