St Benedict’s College, Kotahena walked away with the under 19 ‘A’ division Basketball Championship, defeating Maris Stella College, Negombo with a comfortable 28 point lead in the final which worked off at the St Josoph’s College, Maradana yesterday. The final scores were 73-45. Sri Lanka Schools Basket Ball Association conducted the tournament.

Benadictine Udayanga Perera who shot 20 points and did a great job under the basket in the finals was adjudged as the Most Valuable Player of the Tournament while his skipper Kanishka Perera received the award for the Best Offensive Player.

Maris Stella’s Akila Jayawardena was awarded as the best Defensive player.

Benedictines maintained the command from the beginning, but received a tough challenge from the opponents during the first three quarters.

Yet the half time scores were 31-20, Maris Stella came very close during the second quarter when the score board read 14-15, one point behind the champs.

During the final quarter Benedictines kept the lead grow as the rivals given up the match. Clinton Stallon scored 14 points for the winners while Akila Jayawardena added 10 points while Hemantha Fernando scored 11 points for the losers.

St Joseph’s College beat St Peter’s College to win the third place scoring 66-47. Half time scores were 29-15 keeping Josophians in the lead.

Praneeth Udamalagoda and Shehan Perera scored 34 and 17 points respectively for the Josophians while P Sudesh and Madhushanka Ratnayake added 18 and 15 points respectively to the Peterites.

Special Awards
Best Defensive Player: Akila Jayawardena (Maris Stella College)

Best Offensive Player: Kanishka Perera (St Benedict College)

Most Valuable Player: Udayanga Perera (St Benedict College)

Champions trophy: St Benedict College, Colombo

First runner-up: Maris Stella College, Negombo

Second runner-up: St Josoph’s College, Maradana
