An Astounding Performance at the Benedictine Carol Service by Kenny Leon
CollegeThe annual carol service of St. Benedicts College was held on Saturday 22nd December 2007 at St. Lucia's Cathedral. The evening began with the singing of `Oh come, Oh come Emmanuel, with the choristers entering from the main isle in procession all dressed in Green Cassocks with white girdles. The Cathedral was full with old bens, parents, parishioners and well-wishers, as it has now become a much-looked forward annual event in the season.

A combination of traditional Christmas songs and carols set the mood for the Christmas spirit. The primary section students too performed a live nativity scene accompanied by the young voices singing, Deck the Halls, O Tannenbaum and Away In A Manger, complete with the actions. The western band provided instrumental renderings Of some traditional numbers. A new feature to this year's carol service was a skit by the drama club.

As usual, the past choristers participated in the singing of some tunes that set toes tapping. Rev Fr. Tony Martyn, Parish Priest of the Cathedral, delivered the Christmas message.


The grand finale was the combination of all three choirs, singing some old Christmas carols such as O Holy Night, and an array of known Christmas medleys, setting in the Christmas cheer. Rev. Bro Director delivered the vote of thanks and the services concluded with the blessing by the Parish Priest.

There was no doubt; the setting was marvelous in the refurbished grand Cathedral, the acoustics perfect and the singing by all three choirs simply sensational. All three choirs received a well-deserved standing ovation from the congregation at the close of ceremonies. Krishan Rodrigo trained the senior choir, Mrs. Shirani Joseph trained the primary choir, and Mr. Daya Karunathilaka trained the western band. Keep up the singing spirit Bens!
