BENS experience their first defeat of the season
SportBens suffered their first defeat of the season when Maliyadeva College beat St. Benedict's College by 4 wickets in their under 19 inter school cricket tournament match played at Kurunegala during the weekend. (13th & 14th January)

A Caption in the sports page of the Sunday Times Newspaper today read as follows. “Maliyadeva brought down the high riding St. Benedict’s side defeating them by four wickets at Kurunegala”

The match was evenly poised when play ended on day one with the Bens making 150 and the Devans being restricted to 177. But the second day’s play turned in favour of the home team who had the visitors in deep trouble at lunch on 94 for 8.

The post lunch session saw the Bens being able to add only 14 runs being bowled out for 110 which left Devans a target of 84 runs for victory. But even then they underwent some anxious moments before coasting to their second win for the season.

SBC 150 (Jason Perera 43, Praveen Gunawardana 18, Abdul Manas 18, Madura Madusanka 17) and 110 (Jason Perera 39, Arjuna Perera 30)

Maliyadeva 177 (Yohan Soysa 4 for 20, Sachin Peiris 3 for 40, Jason Perera 2 for 49) and 85 for 6 (Sachin Peiris 3 for 34, Jason Perera 2 for 33)

Their next tournament match will be on 17th & 18th January 2012 against Richmond College, Galle at Kotahena.
