Dennis De Rosayro. The Colossus and Messiah of Sri Lanka hockey
Dennis De Rosayro. The Colossus and Messiah of Sri Lanka hockey By Bruce Maurice To describe Dennis De Rosayro as the ultimate sportsman produced by his Alma Mater, St. Benedict’s College, would be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Rev. Fr. Joe Vas : A great director returns home
Most past students of St. Benedict's College, Kotahena who passed through the portals of the school during the 1950s to the 1990s would agree that their beloved teacher Rev Bro Edward (now 75 and living in retirement) was their most unforgettable character.

Tribute to Rev. Fr. Flavian - Reminiscences of 1964-1965
Brother Flavian with his magnetic and colourful personality strode the Benedictine arena like the Colossus of Rhodes impressing, inspiring and enthusing everyone with his gentle words of appreciation and winsome smile. He had all the qualities of an accomplished plenipotentiary as he was able to move among princes and paupers with suavity and style. After his triumphant re-entry into Sri Lanka from the States, he had introduced a number of innovations and absorbing activities such as rugger, salon football, archery and chess. The exquisite flow-chart that was prominently displayed gave us a quick inkling as to what was happening in the college administration and who was who. With erudite educationists of that era, R.H. Phillips, Hector Perera, A. Gnanapragasam, Bede Puvimanasingham, J. P. Perera, N.D.G. Reginauld, Wilfred Perera, C. Pathmanathan, Major Douglas Chapman, J.F. Jegarajasingham and the like, the standard of education progressed by leaps and bounds. Regular inspection by the General Manager of the Catholic Schools plus the government inspectors and serious supervision insisted upon by Brother Flavian, helped a great deal to maintain educational excellence and mastery of self. Discipline was remarkable. The parents and Old Bens were much delighted. The ecclesiastical authorities were extremely proud of that premier Catholic institution in the country.

Voice.Print wins Silver and Bronze Medal at World Choir Games in China
Voice.Print, a 10 member choral outfit consisting of old boys of St. Benedict’s College – Colombo have achieved instant recognition and success by bagging two medals at the World Choir Games held in Shaoxing, China last month. Popularly known as the Olympics of Choral singing, the games which are held every two years saw participation from over 400 choirs from 78 countries competing in 21 different categories of music genres. Voice.Print, who specialise in 9 part acapella singing, competed for the first time at the event, being the only choir from Sri Lanka at the games. They competed in the Champions Competition, which was the competition for past medal winners at the Games. Being recommended to compete directly in the Champions competition, with no prior experience, the choir bagged a Silver medal in the Pop music category, singing songs from Frankee Lymon, Queen, Michael Jackson and our very own Lahiru Perera. Their 9 part rendition of the popular Rambari, scored the highest amongst the judges and was an instant crowd favourite. They also bagged a Bronze medal competing in the Sacred Music category, singing excerpts from Mozart, Bach, James Stevens and the highly popular Namo Mariyani by Fr. Marcelline Jayakody. The choir was also invited to sing at 03 Gala Concerts, at which some of the most popular acts participating at the Games were showcased. Voice.Print which also have a vocal beat-boxer were star attractions at these concerts and were also featured three days consecutively in the news and print media in Shanghai. The choir was accompanied by a four piece band made up of highly talented Sri Lankan musicians who had the crowd on their feet every time they performed. About the Choir: The technical definition of a Voice.Print is “a graphical interpretation of an individual’s voice on paper, uniquely characteristic of the individual”. The choir comprises about 10 members from different batches of St. Benedict’s College, who have been singing together since 2006. The choir performs all types of music ranging from Folk, Swing, Be-Bop, R & B, Jazz, Rock & Roll, Gospel and Ethnic music. They have since grown into a well know outfit since their introductory concert in 2006, performing at corporate cocktails, launches, Christmas shows, and also lend their voices to radio jingles, TV documentaries, and advertising campaigns. They are a much sought after acapella group, and perform with a beat-boxer as well. They have also recorded tracks with numerous local artistes, doing acapella versions of some of these artistes’ popular songs. In addition, they have also re-recorded their own version of various popular songs which have received considerable airplay on Sri Lankan English radio. The unique feature of the choir is the complicated 9 part arrangements which they work into their TTBB selections. All parts and music are composed and arranged by Dilan Irugalbandara and Julius Mitchell. Amazing Journey to China: After completing a very successful Christmas season in 2009 with their version of ‘The Little Drummer Boy’ being a radio hit, Voice.Print was recommended to participate in the Champions Competition of the World Choir Games. With little over 04 months to prepare, the group arduously embarked on their mission of raising the required funds for their participation. With choral music in the country being relatively less popular than pop music acts and Bollywood glamour and fanfare, sponsorships and donations were hard to come by, and the group almost shelved their plans of competing. But for a last minute intervention by “Caravan Fresh” - the newly revamped bakery store, and a generous contribution by SriLankan Airlines, the choir might have not been able to participate. Having given an opportunity, the choir embarked on perfecting music and repertoire, carefully selecting pieces not traditionally performed at the Choir Games, in a bid to differentiate from the numerous other choirs. Their ploy to include ethnic music and reggae rifts into stereotype pop songs from Michael Jackson and Queen were rewarded with judges praising their ability to give a new contemporary twist to the songs. Their 6/8 acapella introduction and progressive baila version of “Rambari” was easily the most recognized song at the Choir Games Village, with Voice.Print being asked to perform it at every nook and corner, canteen and concert. Having overcome unexpected obstacles and overcoming all odds to participate and win, the group is now being recognized for its efforts by being invited to tour Philippines, Indonesia, South Korea and Russia – at the invitation of some of the most sought after conductors and vocal music trainers in those countries. Voice.Print will embark on their global tours shortly, post their concert in Colombo in September which will showcase their World Choir Games repertoire and more importantly as Michael Sathasivam, the leader of the group points out “to felicitate and thank the few people in the country who placed their confidence in Voice.Print and backed us to win“. Voice.Print and Friends – Passage to China will be in the second week of September 2010, and will showcase the repertoire of the World Choir Games, and also collaborations with local artistes who are friends and have been supporters of the group since its inception. What we owe the De La Salle community is beyond evaluation - Speach delivered by Old Ben Gamini Kannangara
"What we owe the De La Salle community is beyond evaluation - Speach delivered by Old Ben Gamini Kannangara on the ocassion of the Felicitation Dinner to mark the 140th Anniversary of the arrival of De La salle Brother" The Christian Brothers have served SBC admirably for many generations especially the children of middle & lower income families. As the demand grew for admissions they opened additional schools throughout the island. Since the declaration of independence in 1948 the Christian Brothers Schools had to face new challenges. Our nation went through a cultural revolution which affected the Christian Brothers Institutions.
